Is isomalt keto? In small amounts, if you count half its carbs
Barely raises blood sugar, but it's partly digested. Most people count about half its grams as carbs.
The full answer
Isomalt is a sugar alcohol with a very low glycemic index, around 2, so it barely moves blood sugar. That's why it's in so much sugar-free hard candy and "keto" chocolate.
But isomalt is partly digested. Roughly half of it is broken down and absorbed, giving about 2 calories per gram, half the calories of sugar. Labels that subtract all of it to show "zero net carbs" overstate how keto-friendly it is.
A practical rule many keto dieters use is to count about half of the isomalt grams as net carbs. A few sugar-free hard candies fit easily into a daily carb budget; a whole bag doesn't, and will likely upset your stomach too.
If you want sweets that don't count at all, look for products sweetened with erythritol, allulose, stevia or monk fruit instead.
What to look for on the label
- Count about half the isomalt grams as net carbs
- "Sugar alcohols" on the US nutrition label shows how much is in each serving
- Erythritol- or allulose-sweetened sweets count less
