Low-FODMAPYes
The short answer
Turbinado sugar is steam-washed cane sugar. It is not keto. It is vegan only when the refinery did not use bone char, which many turbinado producers skip and some do not. It bakes like a coarse white sugar with a little molasses flavor.

Safe in small amounts; may bother some people or raise blood sugar.

Turbinado sugar is a sugar food, not an E-number. It is partly refined cane sugar. Bone-char filtration is less common for this style than for fully refined white cane sugar, and a brand still has to say if that step was skipped.

Daily limit: Experts haven’t set a number because normal food amounts are far below any level of concern.

What is it?

The name comes from the centrifuge, the turbine, that spins the molasses off the crystals. What is left is still almost all sucrose. A spoon of it is not a lower-sugar choice than white sugar.

Where it comes from: Turbinado sugar is cane sugar crystallized and then washed with steam so only a thin film of molasses remains. The crystals are pale gold and dry, unlike moist brown sugar.

Why it’s in food

  • Sweetens coffee
  • Tops a muffin
  • Crunches on a crust
  • Replaces white sugar cup for cup

Health & gut impact

Almost all sucroseConcern

The molasses film is thin. Blood sugar responds to turbinado as it does to other cane sugar.

Composition of turbinado sugar

Bone char is a brand questionUnder study

Many turbinado mills do not use bone char. The bag is the place that fact has to be printed. The crystal color does not prove it.

Cane-sugar refining practices

What can I use instead?

Demerara sugar

Ratio: A coarser cousin with a bit more molasses

Best for: Tea and topping

Sucrose

Ratio: Fully refined white sugar

Best for: Cakes that should stay pale
