GRAS in the US (by notice), and since 2018 the FDA counts it as dietary fiber on labels. In the EU and Canada it's sold as a food ingredient, not an additive, so it has no E-number.

What is it?

Inulin is a chain of fructose that your gut can't digest, so bacteria in the colon ferment it. It adds fiber, a faint sweetness and a creamy body, which is why it often replaces sugar and fat in low-calorie foods.

Where it comes from: Extracted with hot water from chicory roots, or from agave and Jerusalem artichoke.

Why it’s in food

  • Raises the fiber count on the label
  • Replaces some sugar and fat in low-calorie foods
  • Feeds gut bacteria in "prebiotic" products
  • Adds body to yogurt and ice cream

Common questions

Is Inulin safe?

Generally safe (86/100). GRAS in the US (by notice), and since 2018 the FDA counts it as dietary fiber on labels. In the EU and Canada it's sold as a food ingredient, not an additive, so it has no E-number.

Is Inulin vegan?

Yes.

Is Inulin gluten-free?

Yes.

Is chicory root fiber the same as inulin?

Yes. "Chicory root fiber" and "chicory root extract" on a label almost always mean inulin.

Why does inulin make me gassy?

Gut bacteria ferment it and release gas. Starting with small amounts lets your gut adjust.
