It is a milling fraction of wheat.
It is wheat and contains gluten.
The carbohydrate is mostly fiber, so the net count is low, but it is not a typical keto staple.
Wheat bran is high in fructans and in GOS.
Safe in small amounts; may bother some people or raise blood sugar.
Rules by country
Wheat bran is a food ingredient with no E-number. It falls under the wheat and bran standards in the United States and the EU, and it carries the mandatory wheat allergen declaration.
What is it?
Bran makes up roughly a tenth of the grain's weight but the larger share of its insoluble fiber and of its magnesium, iron and zinc. It is sold as a loose bran, as a coarse or fine grade, and as a pre-mixed high-fiber cereal. Because the nutrients it carries are bound in phytic acid and the fiber is not broken down, it raises the stool bulk and slows the absorption of whatever is eaten with it.
Where it comes from: The outer layer of the wheat kernel, the hard outer coat that gets separated during milling. It is where most of the fiber in the grain sits, along with a large share of the minerals.

Health & gut impact
A 30 gram serving of wheat bran supplies about 8 grams of fiber, most of it insoluble, and adding it to a meal measurably lowers the glycaemic response to the starch eaten alongside it. That effect is one of the reasons wholegrain recommendation works at the level of the whole grain rather than the single nutrient.

The bran fraction is rich in iron, zinc and magnesium, but the phytic acid in the same layer binds those minerals and reduces absorption. So bran adds minerals to the diet while making some of them harder to take up, and soaking or fermenting the cereal partly reverses that.
EFSA, dietary reference values for iron and zinc
Wheat bran is high in fructans and in galacto-oligosaccharides, and a 30 gram serving carries enough of both to be a problem on a low-FODMAP diet. It is one of the highest-fructan foods in the diet.

What can I use instead?
Ratio: Use the same weight for a softer bran with soluble fiber
Best for: Bran with more soluble fiber
Ratio: Use about two thirds of the weight
Best for: More omega-3 and more soluble fiber

Common questions
Is wheat bran healthy?
For most people it is a good way to add fiber, and it lowers the blood sugar response of a meal. The caveats are that it is high in fructans, that it binds some minerals, and that adding a lot of it at once can cause bloating.
Is wheat bran gluten-free?
No. It is a milling fraction of wheat, so it contains gluten and is not suitable for celiac disease.
How much wheat bran should I eat?
Most dietary fiber guidance points to around 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day in total. Half a cup of dry bran is about 8 grams, so a moderate serving each morning gets you a useful way toward that.
Is Wheat bran safe?
Use in moderation (74/100). Wheat bran is a food ingredient with no E-number. It falls under the wheat and bran standards in the United States and the EU, and it carries the mandatory wheat allergen declaration.
Is Wheat bran vegan?
Yes. It is a milling fraction of wheat.
Is Wheat bran gluten-free?
No. It is wheat and contains gluten.
