The short answer
Glucosamine is sold to relieve joint pain, and the evidence for it is mixed though most people tolerate it well. It is out for anyone with a shellfish allergy, so read the source on the label before you buy it.
Use in moderation

Safe in small amounts; may bother some people or raise blood sugar.

Glucosamine has no E-number and is not an additive, so it is sold as a supplement rather than as a food ingredient. Health Canada licenses it as a natural health product and allows a joint pain claim for glucosamine sulfate at 1500 mg a day, and the source organism has to be named on the pack. In the United States it is a dietary supplement.

Daily limit: Experts haven’t set a number because normal food amounts are far below any level of concern.

What is it?

Glucosamine is an amino sugar, the building block the body uses to make cartilage, and in a supplement it is the same molecule whether it came from a shell or a fermenter. What it does in a tablet is supply a raw material for cartilage and for the fluid inside the joint, and the number to look at is the daily dose: Health Canada allows 1500 mg a day for glucosamine sulfate, so most packs cover it with two 1000 mg capsules or three 500 mg ones.

Where it comes from: Almost all of it is made from shrimp, crab, lobster or krill shells, which are broken down and the sugar part of chitin is purified. A minority is fermented from plant material, and that is the version to look for if you avoid shellfish.

Why it’s in food

  • Supplying a cartilage building block
  • Studied for knee osteoarthritis relief
  • Paired with chondroitin in formulas
  • Added to joint and bone supplements

Health & gut impact

Joint pain evidenceUnder study

EFSA concluded that a cause and effect relationship between glucosamine and maintenance of joints has not been established. Health Canada is more generous, allowing glucosamine sulfate to claim relief of joint pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee at 1500 mg a day, so you get a different verdict depending on which regulator you read.

Blood thinnersUnder study

There is evidence that in some people taking warfarin or another coumarin anticoagulant, the INR reading rises once glucosamine is started, which means the blood thins further than the dose was meant for. EFSA judged that a real interaction risk exists, so if you take one of these medicines, ask your doctor before you buy a glucosamine tablet.

Shellfish proteinUnder study

Glucosamine made from shells can carry traces of the protein that sets off the allergy. NHS patient information for fish and shellfish allergy advises people with either allergy to avoid glucosamine supplements, because they may still contain small amounts of fish or shellfish protein.

How the source is declaredBenefit

Health Canada requires the source organism to be named, so a pack says whether the glucosamine came from crab, krill, lobster, prawn or shrimp, or from a fermentation with Aspergillus or Rhizopus moulds. That line on the label is the only way to know whether the plant version is what you are buying.

What can I use instead?

Chondroitin

Ratio: The same 1500 mg a day if you want the partner ingredient

Best for: The other half of the usual joint formula

Fish oil

Ratio: A tablespoon a day covers the omega-3s

Best for: Joint comfort from a different route

Turmeric

Ratio: A quarter of a teaspoon in food

Best for: Warmth and colour instead of a capsule

Common questions

Does glucosamine come from shells?

Most of it does. The shells of shrimp, crab, lobster or krill are broken down and the sugar part of chitin is purified into the powder in the capsule. A minority is made by fermenting plant material, and Health Canada insists the source is named on the pack, so you can tell which one you are buying.

Does glucosamine help arthritis?

Some people say it does and the results are mixed. Health Canada allows glucosamine sulfate to claim relief of knee osteoarthritis pain at 1500 mg a day, while European regulators have said a link with joint maintenance is not established. Give it at least four weeks before you judge it.

Is glucosamine safe if I take warfarin?

Not without checking first. EFSA found evidence that glucosamine can raise the INR in people taking warfarin or similar anticoagulants, which means the blood thins more than your doctor intends. Ask your doctor or your pharmacist before adding it to anything you take daily.

Is there a vegan glucosamine?

Yes. Some makers ferment the same molecule from plant material instead of shells, and the pill looks identical either way. Read the source line rather than the front of the pack, because the vegan version is the exception rather than the rule.

Is Glucosamine safe?

Use in moderation (74/100).

Is Glucosamine vegan?

Depends. Most is made from shellfish shells, a fermented plant version is sold.
